Bold Statement

I’m no shrinking violet and my decorating style reflects that. I’m always looking for big, bold pieces that are unique and stylish. Recently I added a grandfather cuckoo clock to my living room to serve as the focal point.

I searched through many grandfather cuckoo clocks from traditional and antique clocks to modern clocks with interesting exteriors. In the end, I settled on a one-of-a-kind Carved Bear grandfather clock. It has a wooden exterior that is decorated with two tall pine trees running up the sides. At the bottom between the two trees is a mama bear with her cub, carved in intricate detail. Every 15 minutes the figures at the top of the clock dance. The piece is incredibly charming and an excellent anchor for the room.

Making a Dramatic Statement

grandfatherclockIn the world of interior decorating, it is commonly held that the best way to make a bold statement is with an understated overall look punctuated by bold or dramatic pieces. This means that if you want a drastic paint color, that should be the focal point of the room. Make sure the accessories complement but don’t overshadow that paint job.

Or, if you’re going to go with a more neutrally based color palette, make sure that you have some pieces that can serve as conversation starters. This can be a particularly ornate hand made grandfather clocks, or it can be a dark mahogany polished buffet. Whatever the dramatic piece, don’t go overboard with the look. Choose that one bold item and build the look of the room around it.

A Classical Touch

oak-grandfather-clocksThere are certain pieces of décor that characterize a home as stately and refined. Chandeliers are one such item, as they call to mind visions of classical decadence. The traditional grandfather clock is another. It doesn’t attract too much attention to itself, but its solid bulk still makes for a satisfying presence in the corner of a room.

Digital clocks might be convenient, but they don’t offer the same aesthetic appeal as oak grandfather clocks. These clocks leave the impression of being pricy antiques when in fact they are quite modern. A digital clock lacks charm, while grandfather clocks provide it in spades.

Stately Elegance in a Stand-Up Clock

Grandfather clocks are distinguished from other timepieces with a pendulum mechanism in that the pendulum is encased. Antique clocks often featured a 30-hour movement, which required that they be wound once a day. It’s not uncommon for novice collectors to discover an old grandfather clock, wind it, and then believe that the clock is malfunctioning because it stops a day later.

Most new cherry grandfather clocks have been upgraded to an eight-day movement, requiring the owner to wind them once a week. Some have claimed that this type of movement decreases the longevity of the clock’s mechanism, but very little evidence has been presented to support it. In any case, grandfather clocks bring a sense of stately elegance to any room.
